President Obama promised change. And the president’s budget proposal delivers on the promise to transform our national priorities. The Obama budget puts regular Americans first for once — by calling for a more than $630 billion investment in guaranteed health care for every American. To pay for it, President Obama will cut back taxpayer-funded government subsidies to private insurance companies and slash tax giveaways to the wealthiest Americans (those making $250,000 a year). The budget also makes a significant investment in education and takes a bold stand on climate change.
Two versions of the Obama budget passed the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in early April. Now the two chambers will merge the bills and vote on a final budget in the coming weeks. Congress will then begin the appropriations process, where funding levels for various public services will be determined.
